202 Ocean Avenue in Cape May Point, Joan and Carlo Tamasco

"Somewhere in Time" is an aptly named property situated at the corner of Yale and Ocean Avenues in Cape May Point. This beautiful 3-story Victorian home with sweeping first and second floor porches was built at the turn of the century. It sits on a large lot that has been lovingly maintained through the years with raised beds, grape vine arbors, and built-in seating as well as numerous flower beds.

The property was converted into nine condominium units, and seven years ago, Carlo and Joan Tamasco bought a unit here. Both bring much landscaping and gardening design experience to Cape May Point. Carlo owned and operated a tree company in northern New Jersey for 46 years. He sold his company and retired two years ago. Joan is an avid gardener. She fell in love with horticulture as a young girl working with her father in his vegetable garden. She transformed the gardens at their historic Basking Ridge property and renovated their Sears kit home and barn.

Together, they developed a vision for the transformation of the grounds at "Somewhere in Time" while simultaneously remaining true to the property's historic character and maintaining a Certified Wildlife Habitat certification. The Tamascos became the condominium's "garden committee". While the other condo owners supported their efforts, Carlo and Joan provided most of the muscle. It is truly their pleasure and a labor of love.

To date, the Tamasco's have installed many new beds along Yale and Ocean Avenues and the lengthy porch. Their next goal is to reconstruct all of the raised beds along the northeast side of the property and then install new plantings. This will be a big undertaking, but they are clearly up for the challenge!

"Somewhere in Time" is located next to the Cape May Point Post Office, just one block from the beach at 202 Ocean Avenue in Cape May Point. This garden is not to be missed! Joan and Carlo welcome visitors and love to talk about gardening.

Coleman Cottage Cape May Point

The Coleman Cottage

A love story, a 128-year-old house, and a garden! Such is the surprise that will enchant you on the corner of Yale and Lehigh Avenues in Cape May Point. Dale and Denise Coleman began their journey together over 15 years ago, simply as neighbors who both enjoyed gardening. They would reunite as friends each summer upon their separate returns from winter homes in Maryland and New Jersey. Romance blossomed throughout the many summer visits, resulting in a joyful marriage and an even better garden!

The Coleman Cottage, as they named it, was built in 1897. Dale, now 91, restored and enhanced it by adding a second-story bedroom and bath. The colorful exterior of chocolate brown, deep red, and gold accent the charismatic charm of a house that resembles that of Hansel and Gretel. Denise, a nature garden enthusiast, is a member of the Washington Garden Club in New Jersey, chairperson for their public education, and director of District 4 Garden Clubs of New Jersey. She has recently been including many native plants that benefit wildlife.

Within the gardens are asters, viburnum, Joe Pye weed, parsley, chokeberry, fennel, locust, and holly. Dear to her heart is milkweed for monarch butterflies. She not only has milkweed plants in her garden, but sells their seedlings ( for a small donation, which goes to local community gardens) on her street corner every July and August.

Please come to the Point and enjoy this beloved home and garden!
