Understanding Earthworms: Uncovering Nature's Gardeners
A few of our members volunteer at the local elementary school- West Cape May Elementary, in an effort to teach children at a young age of the importance of gardening.
This particular session was to stress the usefulness of worms to the soil.
Carol Venet read a lovely book, "The Diary of a Worm" by Doreen Cronin. Carol also made a glass worm farm and brought worms from her compost pile and each child had a paper plate with a worm on it to study with a magnifying glass. The worms were then placed in the farm jar. Carol had put stones in the bottom, then layers of soil and sand with grass on the top. Each student was then given a package of colored beads and a pipe cleaner to make a take home worm. We added eyes and a smile.
Carol had given the teacher a list of worm videos which the children watched as they made their bead worms. I think they enjoyed the session! 🪱🐛 Glenda Unzelmann assisted Carol with the lesson.
